Self Employed Health Insurance
|
One thing which many self employed people generally do not think about it health insurance. Health insurance is usually offered when you start working for a company and it secures you in case anything goes wrong. You would get statuary sick pay with most companies too, but when you are self employed you do not get anything.
Any health insurance that you want has to be organised and paid for by you. Unfortunately this is not always as easy as it sounds!
Why Getting Self Employed Health Insurance can be a Hassle
You would think that getting health insurance for the self employed would be relatively easy, but in fact it usually isn’t. When you actually find a company willing to give you health insurance, it is usually for quite large costs and it is also not all that it seems.
For example, when you are paying higher costs than most people for your insurance, you would assume that things such as sickness and accidents would be covered. However, if you look closely at a health insurance company’s terms and conditions, you will notice that generally there is a time limit before you can claim on your insurance. This time limit is often 14 days. So you have to be ill for 14 days and have proof from a doctor that you were ill, before the insurance will pay out.
Now hardly anybody is ever ill for 14 days and the trouble is, when you are self employed having just a couple of days off can often be hard to ideal with financially. So you would have no money at all if you were off for a week and most self employed people do not know this. So when looking for health insurance always make sure that you read the terms and conditions and see if you agree with it.
There are literally hundreds of companies available who offer health insurance to the self employed but it can be hard finding one to actually suit your needs. Compare as many companies as you can and be sure that you are not getting yourself into something which will not give you anything back.
